JEWELLERY AT SPRING FAIR BIRMINGHAM – THE BEST OF BRITISH With a record number of 500 Jewellery exhibitors confirmed for Spring Fair Birmingham 2006 (5–9 February, NEC Birmingham), buyers will enjoy a fabulous choice of product and suppliers when the show opens for business at the start of February. Spring Fair attracts the largest gathering of jewellery specialists to any UK event, with over 11,000 international jewellery retailers attending in 2005. Jewellery at Spring Fair is supported by the British Jewellers Association (BJA) and the National Association of Goldsmiths (NAG). 500 exhibitors will showcase their latest ranges of gold and precious jewellery, loose diamonds & gemstones, silver jewellery, costume jewellery, watches, clocks, tools and findings, packaging and display. CARRS LAUNCHES WORLD'S FIRST TRULY NON-TARNISH STERLING SILVER AT SPRING FAIR CARRS The Spring Fair will see Carrs Silver of Sheffield reveal Lustre Silver, a groundbreaking new sterling silver that is highly resistant to tarnishing and requires no more than an occasional wipe with a soft cloth to maintain a gleaming lustre for years to come. Carrs will also launch a collection of new, contemporary ranges at the show. Many of the new pieces take advantage of Lustre Silver's non-tarnishing characteristics to fuse leather with silver (leather traditionally causing problems by increasing the speed with which standard sterling silver tarnishes) and have all the hallmarks of future design classics. New ranges include a holder for the iPod Nano, wallets, passport covers, business card holders and stylish Lustre Silver cutlery. The result of four years' development work, Lustre Silver is perfect for today's busy lifestyles, which leave little time for the regular cleaning and polishing that is essential to prevent standard sterling silver losing its shine and colour. Despite being of the highest quality, items produced from Lustre Silver will take no more caring for than a piece of fine porcelain or crystal. Until now, the only anti-tarnishing solution has been to apply a coating of clear lacquer to the product. Lacquer, however, obscures the brilliance and reflectivity of highly polished silver and eventually deteriorates. Carrs' Lustre Silver overcomes the tarnishing problems associated with traditional sterling silver, and even silver-based anti-tarnish alloys. It has all the sparkling luminescence of standard sterling silver, with none of the maintenance issues. Lustre Silver is NOT germanium-based or lacquered. Independent laboratory tests proved conclusively that Lustre Silver remains virtually tarnish-free, even when subjected to an atmosphere simulating years of use without care. In the same laboratory tests, standard sterling silver rapidly tarnished turning an unattractive blue-black colour. Lustre Silver presents many benefits for the retailer, as well as the consumer. Presentation is effortless, with Lustre Silver retaining its shine while on display, and retailers can stock deeper without fear of tarnishing. Lustre Silver will have its own brand identity and Carrs Silver is investing in a PR and marketing campaign to support retail customers by driving consumers into store. The stylish new designs, while appealing to all ages, will particularly attract younger buyers who have been reluctant to buy silver because of the time consuming polishing regime involved. Despite the many obvious benefits of Lustre Silver, Carrs will not be charging a premium for products supplied in this pioneering new sterling silver. Carrs Silver founder Ron Carr says of Lustre Silver, “We recognised the need for a new sterling silver for new generation. Consumers today want products that stay looking beautiful with the minimum amount of effort. Without progressing to a silver that is easy to care for, the industry is in danger of not attracting enough buyers in the twenty to thirty year old age group to promote growth. We hope that Lustre Silver, with its high quality yet low-maintenance characteristics, will help retailers to boost silver sales significantly.” Carrs' new lines, photo frames and existing cutlery ranges are available in Lustre Silver now, and the rest of Carrs' extensive product range, from traditional to contemporary, will become available in Lustre Silver in the early part of 2006. Visit Carrs Silver's stand (B30/C31 in Hall 18) at the Spring Fair at the NEC from 5-9 February 2006 to see a range of Lustre Silver products, or call 01142 510610 or visit www.carrs-silver.co.uk for more information. She added that the Fair is a great ‘kick-start' to the New Year, providing the best opportunity to meet existing customers and make new contacts. “Having worldwide recognition as one of the most important trade shows plays an important part in attracting new customers and as the designers are in a designated area, it couldn't be easier for people to track us down,” she added. One young designer exhibiting for the first time and hoping to benefit from the high profile show is Jessica Hewitt. Her range of contemporary silver, acrylic and textile jewellery is bound to attract retailers in search of exciting, vibrant pieces of work. Based in Warwickshire, Jessica, who will share her stand with established designer John Moore, said “This seems the ideal way to target both national and international retailers under one roof and I'm very excited about the prospect of being part of such a prestigious show.” For the very first time, a superb Jewellery Party will be held on the Tuesday night of the fair (7th February) at Mechu -Summerrow, in the heart of Birmingham City Centre. These services include seminars, diamond polishing and valuations of diamonds and jewels set with diamonds. Diamond Group's seminars, which are approved by the National Association of Goldsmiths, are based on two principles: plenty of practical work and no time to waste. Jewellers can learn diamond grading in only 2 days or learn how to detect most treatments and imitations of diamonds in only one day. For (junior) sales-staff Diamond Group proposes a 1-day seminar on “How to Sell More Diamonds”. All these seminars are very popular; close to 1200 jewellers have already followed one. Diamond Group's polishing service is also approved by the N.A.G. Jewellers enjoy the highest standards of quality as their damaged and old-cut diamonds are polished by some of the best diamond-cutters in Antwerp. In contrast to standard certificates, Diamond Group's valuations provide information on the value of the diamond or jewel in addition to its quality. Depending on the intended use, jewellers can request one of three types of values: retail-value, acquisition-value for jewellers or acquisition-value for wholesalers. The prices for these valuations are unbeatable and start at £12 (+ V.A.T.). For more information, visit Diamond Group at the Krochmal & Lieber stand at the Spring Fair (stand J10 in hall 18) or surf to www.diamondgroup.be. R.E. Morrish R.E. Tankel (Scotland) Ltd Against the trend in 2005 H.W. Tankel Scotland Ltd had a very successful year. A large part of this success was due to the launch of the very distinctive and exclusive Asscher Collection of rings, earrings and pendants. In the latter part of 2005 Rubies, Sapphires and Emeralds – cut as Asscher Cut Diamonds were added to the range. We view the success of these products on the fact that we had such a large amount of unsolicited repeat orders from our appointed stockists – in fact quite exceptional. In our view the reason for this is that each stockist has the range on an exclusive basis for their own area, and we also provide window display material and photographs to assist the promotion of the collection. The bottom line in reality is that the product is most attractive, is that little bit different, is distinctive and it sells. During the last 2 months we have been researching new additions to this range, as well as other new models to our normal range of good value diamond jewellery. These will be shown for the first time at the Spring Fair. We look forward to meeting our existing distributors and also the many new companies that we have been fortunate to have gained in 2005, and take this opportunity to wish all in the trade a successful, happy and healthy 2006. Both collections were well supported by china & glass and premium gift independents, department stores and the duty free sector ”. Mark says “I am delighted to be joining the board of Ortak”. The sales and marketing team and in house designers will be continuing to build on an already well established brand in Scotland and we will be working hard with our retail partners to replicate this success in other markets”. Alistair Gray, Managing Director of Ortak said “This is a very exciting appointment for Ortak. We are focusing on developing the brand with the aim of penetrating new markets. Mark brings with him many years of relevant industry experience and is therefore well positioned to lead Ortak into the next phase of the Company's growth plan”. Coupled with Ortak's announcement in November that they are launching in North America, it is clear that expansion and growth are the key focus for the Orkney based jewellery manufacturer in 2006 and beyond. New AnchorCert Diamond Report provides “cut grade” and much more A new diamond grading report, incorporating the recently launched “Cut Grade” for loose modern round brilliant cut diamonds, is now available from AnchorCert. The Gemmological division of the Birmingham Assay Office, which also has an office in Hatton Garden, will be launching the new service at Spring Fair 2006. The growing demand for certification is being driven by a more informed and discerning customer with countless choices of where to shop. Internet selling has made information and price comparisons far more accessible and there is no denying the fact that customers want the facts as well as the “WOW” factor when buying a diamond, even those of commercial qualities. The new AnchorCert diamond report has been developed in response to this. It is presented in a totally different format and has been designed specifically to be attractive and easy to understand for the consumer. A small neat size, the document is easy to handle and store with the diamond and presents all the important information about the gemstone in a concise and clear way, making it very customer friendly and definitely adding value to the diamond. The report is available for all diamond cutting styles and includes plotted facet diagrams as well as measurements and colour and clarity grading. In the case of modern round brilliants, dimensions and angles are shown around a side-view diagram and the diamond is graded for cut according to the latest GIA system using a “Poor” to “Excellent” scale. For diamonds which are not modern round brilliant cut, proportions will be listed with other information. Eric Emms, Director of the AnchorCert Gemmological Office London and Chief Gemmologist for the Birmingham Assay Office said of the new AnchorCert report “The re-sized AnchorCert diamond report presents new information on modern round brilliant cut diamonds that customers are demanding, in a clear manner which will enhance it as a selling tool. The cut grade is also being introduced to our Precious Stone Laboratory Diamond Report.” Samples of the new report will be available on the AnchorCert stand, H32 in Hall 18 at Spring Fair. Someone (or possibly dozens of “someones”) will read your message and call, fax or email you. You will find what you need with only a few seconds spent on the keyboard”. Planet Gold Ltd was established in October 2002 by Simon Botfield and Eddie Philips. Simon Botfield has 20 years experience of sales and marketing in the jewellery trade in the UK and internationally. Eddie Philips has 18 years experience of mass production in the jewellery trade, with a previous 6 years experience of mass production in the giftware trade. The combined experience and industry knowledge of both directors was key to the successful development of the new business. Planet Gold Ltd is a manufacturer of 9ct and Silver earrings, pendants and nose studs. The company is very proud of the fact that the majority of the range is manufactured in the UK. The directors felt that being UK manufacturer gives the company many advantages. These advantages include quicker delivery times, better product quality controls and quicker reaction times to customer special requirements such as bespoke product development and special packaging needs. Simon and Eddie also felt that the manufacturing systems used by Planet Gold enable the company to compete very favourably against imports from the Far East. The majority of the range is made up of items that retail between £5.00 and £50.00, with all lines being described as every retailers “must have lines”. The most popular part of the range are the 9ct cubic zirconia studs, with all sizes, shapes and colours being manufactured in yellow and white gold. Single studs for men have also been very strong lines in recent times along with white gold earrings. Planet Gold Ltd supply volume buyers only, supplying trade wholesalers and multiple retailers. The company has developed a strong export business to Eire, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Planet Gold Ltd will be exhibiting at the NEC Spring Fair (STAND 17P2) . The company will be launching a number of exciting new lines at the show and is actively looking to increase its customer base. Rofin Offer Improvements to Jewellery Design and Manufacture Rofin-Baasel UK Ltd Hall 17 Stand S48 Rofin is the leading manufacturer of laser cutting, welding and marking/engraving systems for jewellery and giftware. Laser Welding At Spring Fair 2006 Rofin will exhibit the market leading StarWeld Manual Performance laser welder, which offers several advantages compared to conventional soldering. The localised heat input and the fact the material is welded using only the original metal results in considerable time saving and quality improvements. Since the manual laser welder was first introduced in 1992, Rofin-Baasel has installed nearly 4,500 worldwide. The laser welder enables a jeweller to perform quick repairs while the customer waits, set stones, repair close to precious stones or other heat-sensitive objects, assemble jewellery avoiding post processing and fill porosity from castings with ease. In particular, laser welding is very attractive when sizing platinum rings – seamless joining is possible as there is no need to use solder in the joining process, and after polishing the join is always invisible (a result more difficult to achieve with platinum solder). Laser Marking Rofin will also demonstrate the innovative new ‘EasyMark' laser marking system - a compact, operator-friendly and portable laser marker. EasyMark is a competitively priced bench-top marking system incorporating a state-of-the-art industrial laser source combined with x/y (galvo), vertical and rotary axes. Marking layouts are established using (or imported into) LaserCAD – a powerful yet easy to use software package allowing the operator to mark flat or cylindrical items with any conceivable text or pattern. The Class 1 EasyMark unit is air-cooled, negating the need for unwieldy water cooling systems, and operates off a single-phase power supply. Laser marking, unlike conventional methods is fast, flexible and permanent, producing a high quality, high legibility mark without regular use of consumables. The non-contact nature and small focussed spot size enables extraordinary detail in the engraving. Rofin StarWeld Performance laser welder & Easymark laser marker – both ideally suited to workshops with limited space. DAVRAN JEWELLERY Davran Jewellery, will be exhibiting a compact range of gold wedding rings for the first time this year. John van Lierop, Sales Director explains, ‘ We are small British manufacturer, one of a dwindling band who are manufacturing our jewellery in Birmingham not China. We produce and stock a wide range of over 2,500 different products, and we are well worth a visit, come onto our stand Hall 17 K11 and see what we make. We are the first port of call for hundreds of jewellers looking for specials, and I am often told our specials and approval service is second to none. Most independent Jewellers are finding fewer people coming through the door, it is very important to know where to get things you haven't got, to know they will come when promised, and, when they do arrive, that they are as beautiful and well made as the customer could wish. I feel that Davran is now through the worst of the storm from cheap imports. Many retailers are beginning to appreciate that although we are not “cheap as chips”, we have the stock for quick delivery, it is good quality, and it is not in every shop on the High Street, QVC and the plethora of odd balls selling jewellery today. It doesn't matter how inexpensive it is if you can't repeat it when you need to, or how much you sold it for if it comes back for credit or repair.' deLange A new and exciting range of pearl designs which gets away from the traditional pearl necklace. The jewellery is made from–fresh water pearls and glass beads– and is all hand assembled. A range which contains leather charm necklaces with matching bracelets.
